In Peacemaker episode 5, “Monkey Dory,” Charlie the Gorilla is discovered at the Butterflies’ Glan Tai bottling plant and is dispatched in the same episode by John Economos (Steve Agee) with a chainsaw shortly after the gorilla has yelled, “ Die humans!” Later in the episode, when Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) is getting himself arrested, one of the officers at the jail is reading a paper that notes the gorilla is still on the loose. ![]() An extended newscast plays in the background when Peacemaker (John Cena) visits his father’s house discussing how the gorilla was stolen from Evergreen Zoo. Peacemaker episode 4, “The Choad Less Traveled,” includes two background elements that telegraph Charlie the Gorilla’s introduction in a future episode and set fan expectations for Grodd. Gorilla Grodd is primarily a Flash supervillain who has super-intelligence, super-strength, and various mental powers. Even in Peacemaker, the show has already quietly confirmed a wealth of strange characters as DCEU canon, including Bat-Mite and Matter-Eater Lad. James Gunn has made a habit of pulling out obscure characters to include in his superhero adaptations, both for Marvel and for DC. Crammed full of 1980s pop culture references, you’ll speed through this single player game and come out the other side smiling.Warning: Contains spoilers for Peacemaker episode 5.Īfter Peacemaker episode 4, a number of fan theories circulated about Charlie the Gorilla and James Gunn introducing Gorilla Grodd to the DCEU, but Peacemaker episode 5 makes a joke of the whole situation. With a range of believable emotions on display, some very good dialogue and a streamlined, 12-ish hours of play, it’s a wheeze from start to finish. ![]() It manages to escape the long shadow of the excellent movie cast and deliver Guardians who somehow feel unique to the game itself. ![]() The second Marvel game from publisher Square Enix (following the avoidable Marvel’s Avengers), Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a great action game with an enjoyable storyline. Play on: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox X/S, Xbox One Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Recommended as a great superhero game but also one that feels very different to others out there. Loosely based on the Midnight Sons storyline, you take on Lilith and her quest to steal the Darkhold in this goth-centric battle to stop the world ending. It’s a different experience but one that is just as thrilling as you create your hero, The Hunter, and team-up with some classic (Iron Man, Doctor Strange) and not so well known heroes (Magik, Nico Minoru) from the Marvel universe. Midnight Suns is an alternative to regualr superhero games. It’s a streamlined Batman experience, with surprise takedowns and really crunchy punch-ups making up the bulk of the game, way before the sequels got a little too ambitious with bloat. But for us, Batman: Arkham Asylum is the better stealth-and-punch game of the three. Really, you can take your pick of Rocksteady’s Batman games - Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight - and have a good time with all three of them. So while we can point to a bunch of games with superheroes in them, these are the best at capturing the world of the comic book and turn it into something really special. The best superhero video games understand that it’s just as much about the characters, the worlds they inhabit, their motivations, and interactions with their peers that make superheroes so compelling. Superheroes are perfectly suited to video games, but it’s taken a while for developers to get up to speed and realise that it’s not just about trying to replicate cool comic book powers and gadgets. ![]()
